North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination Certification Guide

The North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) is developed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to help individuals gain skills and knowledge to work as a pharmacist in the United States. The North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination is one of the two licensure requirements considered state-specific by NABP to become eligible to perform as a pharmacist. The other requirement that candidates must fulfill to achieve this NABP certification is to pass the Pharm.D. Degree accredited by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education. The NAPLEX exam tests candidates’ knowledge in major aspects of the practice of pharmacy.

About the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam

The North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam is a computer-based test that is delivered at Pearson VUE testing center. It includes 225 questions to be answered within 6 hours. Only 200 questions will be marked in your result and the other 25 questions are unmarked and are used for experimental purposes. However, the scored and unscored questions are not highlighted and cannot be determined by candidates. This exam is a bit tricky as candidates cannot skip a question and also cannot go back to change their answer once it is already given.

Two optional 10-minute breaks are allowed during this long test session. The exam format includes multiple-choice, multiple-response, and constructed-response questions. There is a maximum of five attempts overall to pass this exam however, failing three times a year means a candidate will have to wait for 12 more months to retake the exam. The exam areas that will be covered in the finals are mentioned below with their weightage:

  • Obtain, Interpret, or Assess Data, Medical, or Patient Information – 18%
  • Identify Drug Characteristics – 14%
